Anwar and BN draw battle lines in three-cornered fight August 16 2008 - Malaysia Insider Anwar and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail, who vacated the seat on July 31 after holding it for three terms, arrived at the nomination centre with his family and top Pakatan Rakyat heads like Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, Democratic Action Party (DAP) supremo Lim Kit Siang, Husam Musa and Ronnie Liu. Both Penang deputy chief ministers, Mohd Fairuz Khairuddin and P. Ramasamy, also accompanied Anwar to the nomination centre. Arif, who used to be Permatang Pauh Umno division Youth chief when Anwar led it, arrived earlier at 8.38am accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar, Datuk Seri Rais Yatim and Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu. Gerakan president, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Sabah Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman were also present to show support to the BN candidate, seen as a political lightweight to Anwar. "I feel good," Anwar smiled as he spoke to reporters when entering the nomination hall in the Institut Perguruan Tunku Bainun in Seberang Jaya to file his papers. "BN is clearly overwhelmed. It's no longer a by-election. It's more than that," he quipped. Thousands of PKR supporters marched into the field at the nomination centre as early as 8.06am, chanting "Reformasi", holding up banners with some of them wearing Anwar face masks. A smaller group of BN supporters came in half an hour later with their dark blue BN party flags and banners and traded insults including shouting "liwat" or sodomy to Anwar's numerically superior supporters. ...more |
